We Did Not Evolve!

Most health and fitness experts out there come from a worldview where each of us has evolved into the species with the characteristics we have today from a more simplistic species long ago. Yet, they are shocked and amazed at the intricate masterpiece the human body is. Although the characteristics of people (and any other species) may have changed slightly from generation to generation, the truth is that we did not evolve. We were created by a marvelous God, who also created the universe and every species on it. He made humans to bear His image and pursued a relationship with them that is accessible to each of us!

“So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.”

~Genesis 1:27 ESV

A Few Problems with Evolution:

  1. It’s not logical. Evolution relies on chance. As R.C. Sproul explains, “One cannot have purpose accidentally, nor can one have unintentional intentionality” (Consequences of Ideas, p. 74). All of Creation has order and purpose, but evolution by chance cannot possibly afford this reality.
  2. It’s not scientific. I have yet to do more research in this area, but suffice it to say that science cannot prove anything, only observe and experiment. That fact of the matter is that science has never seen the evolution from one species to anther, not in the fossil record and not through any scientist’s own eyes. Even Darwin only observed what we call microevolution, the changing of characteristics, not species. Making the ginormous leap to macroevolution is neithor logical or scientific. That theory of evolution can propose ideas and then try to manipulate evidence as support because it certainly does not have solid observations or experiments from which the conclusions were realistically drawn.

How this Worldview Affects Life:

The world of evolution is a world of chance, a world without God. In a world like this, life is meaningless. Each of us know, however much we ignore this knowledge, that life is meaningful because we all search for it. We want identity and purpose. The Bible says two things about this topic:

“For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.”

~Romans 1:20 ESV

“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”

~Colossians 1:16 ESV

All of life is all for Jesus!

Having a Biblical Worldview:

When we approach health, fitness, and nutrition, we must understand that our problems do not exist because of evolution, but because of sin. Its consequences are death, but Christ offers redemption and eternal life. Any health improvement on this earth is temporary, and identity is not found in our physical circumstances. Yet, identity and purpose exists–in Christ! Understanding that evolution is false is fundamental to correctly understanding the human body, our identities, and the purpose of life. Let’s always remember our lives are not accidents, our problems are not meaningless (they are actually symptoms of the bigger problem of our sinful nature and need for a Savior), and our hope is in God!

“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we[a] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith[b] into this grace in which we stand, and we[c] rejoice[d] in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

~Romans 5:1-5 ESV
